It's safe to say that reading helps society.

Furthermore 'reading' and comprehending are entirely different things.

We have raised the awareness of illiteracy, but we have done a dismal amount to encourage reading comprehension.

The intelligence and overall knowledge gained from reading is sorely lacking these days.

You can read to the elderly, volunteer to read at the library in the youth room, or you can always volunteer at Big Brothers, Big Sisters to help teach reading/read. Also, ask the local schools about volunteering in afterschool program to help teach reading to children.

You could read to people who can't, like the elderly, small children, or the blind. I had the same problem about a year ago. So I read to a bunch of little kids.

Most communities have Adult Literacy Programs. They help adults learn to read.
A lot of primary teachers would love for you to volunteer to read to, and listen to their students.
Old folks homes might welcome an occasional reader to help folks keep up with their periodicals or just to read them stories.
There's lots more things to do with reading, including just sitting in your favorite place with a cuppa whatever and a great read!
Cool! Great hobby! Have fun with it.

At my sons school and even when he was in preschool. They invite people to volunteer to read to children. they have reading buddies. It really motivates them and gets them excited about literacy. Call the principals in your area and see. It is a great program.
