This element and compound have a great many applications mostly in medicine, however though some applications are similar they are quite different chemically and considering the uses they currently have (bipolar disorder), a great deal of consideration would have to go into substituting one for the other.

You can do whatever you want! Lithium and hydrosulfite are 2 different substances and it is not clear why and where you are planning to substitute.
So I say, GO AHEAD AND SUBSTITUTE ALL YOU WANT!

ya, give it a shot. while you're at it, substitute an apple for your heart and a monkey for your car. the one sentence questions don't work very well here.
