I think there's a huge dependency on the issue. When I was 19, I dated a 36 year old; he was kinda neurotic to begin with and I didn't really see a future, but I wanted to give it a go...I definitely think that was too much of an age gap. He is a college professor and I'm an undergrad, so that was way too much.
My current boyfriend is seven years my senior, and we are yet to come upon problems, besides the fact that I'm underage and can't get into bars. I think if you're on the same "wavelength" (as in what you want out of the relationship...casual dating, or settling down for marriage?), then age gaps don't make a huge difference.
As for consent...that seems to me more like at your own discretion.

My dad is 11 years older than my mom, and they've been married almost 37 years and counting, very happily. Compatibility doesn't turn on the age gap between the partners--or it shouldn't; if it does, then there's probably not much between them anyway.

Age of consent? Biologically, humans reach sexual maturity much younger than the legal age of consent--I'm not sure, but I think it's generally 9-12 for girls, 12-14 for boys. Do I think the legal age of consent should be lowered to adjust for this? I'm not sure, but I do think society is way to puritanical. It was not too long ago, relatively speaking, when it would have been unusual for anyone to wait until they were 18 to get married.

It really depends. Different age equals different needs and wants. Personally, i don't think age is a problem. He can't be too young though, may not be able to see alot of facts. Gap of 5-9 years older is fine. Gap of 1 year younger is ok..

Age is just a number in my opinion...as far as age consent goes what are we talkin here..... I agree with Ant tho it does go by maturity level and differences of opinion.

My parents were ten years apart, and while they did manage to stay together for most of my childhood, the difference is what eventually drove them apart. My mom was younger and felt that she was "cheated" out of her youth. I'm sure other couples with ten years or more dbetween them have made it work, but I personally wouldn't go more than a few years either way.
