If you're in the UK contact me - click on my avatar (i think) - and I'll give you the name and email address of someone I know is honest. He will tell you what you get for your money and what you will NOT get.
He will get the book on amazon for you - UK and us - but all other sales and marketing is up to you.
A lot of vanity publishers will rip you off so be careful.

I'm a published author (not vanity) and people I know have used his self publishing service successfully (in terms of getting the job done at a fair price).

First off, get an evaluation. Have some proffessionals look it over and give you an opinnion. I self published my book, but I have the time and the money.

You have to believe in yourself too. Writing a good story takes a lot of talent. It's not something you can learn, in my opinion.

Once you have your manuscript, it's a good idea to register a copyright for it. The Library of Congress has it's own website, forgot what it is but you can google it.

Try to get a literary agent or publisher first. An agent is the best, but opinions are just that. Just because one publisher or agent doesn't like the idea for your story doesnt mean its a bad story.

Self-publishing is like having your own buisness. So, it does take a lot of work. Ask yourself how important writing is to you? Are you willing to take some big risks? Is this what you want to do with your life? Or is it just a hobby?

There are several resources you can find on the internet to self-publish a novel. Some of the more helpful sites include:

http://www.trafford.com
http://www.iuniverse.com
http://www.xlibris.com

While there are many self-publishing sites out there, you should definitely take care to make sure that the printers are legitimate before committing to any transaction.

The first site - trafford.com - has a good self-publishing guide that can help walk you through the process. Good luck!

Would you like to maintain all the rights? Have no upfront costs? Have the control to do all your own design and formatting? Want to do edits after the first printrun? Have the opportunity to include an ISBN if you wish? Yeah, I thought you might. Try www.lulu.com. The name is weird, I know, but they offer the best in online publishing for near zero $$$$ and I've tried most of the PODers.

You don't LOL. Usually if it is estimated by a company to be a good seller than they will publish it. But if they tell you off (from different companies) then most likely publishing it your self will just bring in a negative net from sales.
