I read that most 4WD's are driven by women, and almost never offroad, and the author suggested that it was likely because women simply felt safer in them.

Why do people replying to your question try to tell you why THEY drive a 4WD? That wasn't your question.

4WD's are popular because they are really necessary when trying to navigate around big cities like Melbourne and Sydney to pick up your child from private school. Sometimes you even have to park on the nature strip - a regular car obviously couldn't do that!!!

Now, if you're really rich and can't decide if you want to pick up little Johnny in a 4WD or a BMW you can now buy a BMW 4WD.

Why didn't they think of that earlier!!!

That has something to do with the kind of image projection you can achieve with a 4WD. It says that you are living a lifestyle which necessitates this kind of car - and makes you instantly interesting. It says that you may have a yacht, horses, a house in the country, too. And it says that you are an adventurous sort of person who is capable of driving off road. It's a total image thing, really. Most of the people who drive these things live in a city flat and never leave the pavement. You can even find manifestations of this in fashion - the kind of people who wear hiking boots or Northface jackets, just to say "hey, I actually get to be some place wild and interesting when I'm not an accountant inside my office in Birmingham!".

Some people just like to say they have it. For some its a necessity. Yet others use it for recreational purposes. Can do a lot more recreational activities with a 4WD then a 2WD

For myself, it's pure necessity. The snow gets mighty deep here, and without 4WD, travel is impossible.

I think its the size of the vehicle more than the capabilities. You can sit comfortably, get in and out easily - and the added bonus: you can see where you are going better than if you were in a car.

Because they make a man look macho & cool. And a lady will look sleek & independent in them. Don't you think so?
