He wrote several "books," or volumes under the title of "The Histories," or "The History of Herodotus." In these volumes are stories of the ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Mesopotamians which included Sumerians, Phoenicians, Hittites, Assyrians, Babylonians and Persians. He described the climate, geography and various wars and other events of these peoples. For this work he has been known as, "The Father of History."
He was exiled from his native Halicarnassus and traveled throughout the eastern Mediterranean from Egypt to Italy. He is given credit for comprising a list of magnificent structures that he visited. Some of the places on the list and other places became the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Three were built after his death. One of which was the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the place of his birth.
