Planning a vacation for this december with friends but we haven't decided where yet. I am open to any sugestions as long as it is safe and we can have fun. (Which means no Aruba)

Actually, Aruba is probably a far less dangerous place than many other destinations in this world. Your question is difficult to answer because you don't say if you're interested in visiting some place where the climate is warm or where it is cold. If I were you, I'd take a survey of the friends to be included on this getaway, and then pick the vacation spot that the majority might prefer. That's the best I can do with what I have to work with.

Aruba is the greatest vacation I EVER had. The island is gorgeous and the people were friendly. And it's as safe or safer than anywhere else you can go. There's not a city on earth that doesn't have a murder. For some reason, the US media decided to fixate on one that took place in Aruba. You can chose not to go there, but the Natalee Holloway nonsense would be a pretty dumb reason not to even consider the place.....

St. Petersburg Florida is a great place to vacation and it is very close to alot of parks and attractions and the gulf side of the beach is very relaxed the Salvadore Dali museam is there. The Don Cesar is there. The Vinoit Hotel is there. You can also drive to crystal river and snorkel with the manatees. You can drive to orlando and shop and see disney. Bush Gardens and Adventure Island are in Tampa which is the Airport you would fly into. I grew up there and I miss it and there are alot of hidden gems there if you take the time to look and it's safe in the United States.

Check out the Seychelle Islands. They are off the coast of Africa, and previously ruled by the French. They have the most photographed beach, everyone is very lax and cool. Racism, poverty, any of the worst parts of society don't exist.

If I were you I would plan for New Zealand and Australia. December is their dry season so you will have beautiful weather.
As far as the scenery you will see everything from beautiful white sand beaches, to mountains, to jungles.

I was recently in Barbados, and it was truly fun but I think it's a more romantic place , great for couples... but if you're going with girls and you want to have fun I suggest Hawaii, Mexico (cabo San Lucas) or the Caribbean.
