Go to the area(s) that you are interested in and check out bulletin boards in the cafes or stores, especially those affiliated with your interests/profession. You can also ask to place your own ad there as well, just specify what you're looking for, the price range and what makes you a good tenant.

Try Sublet.com and Citysublets.com - they may charge a fee.
Also check the Village Voice, Resident, WestSide Spirit etc..
