I'm not sure why you say this. Let's look at the big difference between fruit flies and normal houseflies.

Fruit flies:
--hard to swat with fly swatter (they are too small)
--fly slowly, tend to hover and hard to see
--love fruit!

House flies:
--easy to swat because they're big and they like to fly towards the light
-- fly fast, zipping to and fro
-- love to eat poop & garbage

Are you saying that fruit flies are healthier because they eat fruit instead of Poop? That's an excellent observation, and a difficult hypothesis to test in any other organism except the fly given the current FDA ban on poop-eating by humans. (except I did see someone yesterday on Yahoo answers wanting to eat poop.) When you break down fruit and poop, they both have the same essential building blocks of life -- amino acids, sugars and vitamins. Let's take a look at the life span of the fruit fly vs. the housefly. The fruit fly lives an average of 20-30 days in captivity, while the housefly has a lifespan of 15-30 days. So they're about the same. How about quality of life? I tried emailing various fly doctors, but they were all caught up a spider's world wide web. So I have to study the facts, the fruit fly has a lot of fun with his well studied courtship behavior, singing to and licking the female, but the same thing probably happens in the housefly too. Fruit flies are more pampered and spoiled because sometimes they live their lives in little "fly condos" set up by genetics scientists, but that is only a minority of the population. I would think fruit flies are happier because one of their favorite things to drink is wine.

you eat what your body is designed to eat... guess what a healthy diet for dung flies and dung beetles is! similarly, if you try to feed veggies to a shark, it won't be healthy...
