It's probably dirty. Turn it off, then try cleaning the rollers with rubbing alcohol and q-tips. Let it dry, and turn it on again...

Gravity paper fed printers do that a lot of the time. I have an HP LaserJet 6L that does it no matter how tight or loose the paper is. Bottom paper fed printers are better & only grab one paper at a time. This printer was given to me & I just deal with the issues. I can't afford another printer right now or I'd have a bottom paper fed printer like the 860 series.

It helps to fan the stack of paper by hand before you insert it in the feeder or tray. You might also be packing more than your printer can handle, or as another person said, some of the moving parts are wearing out.
Check the FAQ section for your model on HP's website or call them to see if it's a common problem for that printer.

It's a piece of junk. Sorry to be blunt, but in my experience, sometimes HP gets it right, but other times HP can really suck. If a new printer is an option, it may save you a lot of frustration in the long run. You can get new rollers for your printer or actually pay a technician to come out and fix the problem, but that would probably cost more than a new printer.

This happens when you in feed in a fresh stack of paper into the printer. The papers are a little stuck together. What you can do is hold the stack of papers and gently fold them or roll them and straighten them back. This will free up the papers and they will not stick to each other.
I have tried this and it works.

I have experience this before but my printer is the brother printer..what i usually do is to pull out nad put in the cable, then restart the printer. Usually its ok after that. You might wanna try this...
Btw has your printer warranty expired?? if i has..it is really normal for HP printer to have problems after the warranty period. the best thing to do is to trade in for a new one. no use repairing coz you'll face the same prob again.
PS: I'm Using HP @ work

Your printer might just suck.
But there should be a setting somewhere either on the printer itself or in its program to tell it what thickness of paper to expect.

You probably have your paper in upside down.
When you pick up a stack, hold it from the top...which ever way it curls, put that side down.
Hope that makes sense! Ug.. need a visual here!
Also, fan through the pages before loading.

Don't put too much paper in the paper area. Try to put in just half of the maximum capacity. This way the papers aren't compressed too closely together

If is taking more than one sheet at the time :
- pick-up roller / pick-up feed system is used or just dirty - use some alcohol to clean the roller(s).
- separation system is too used or dirty - use some alcohol to clean the roller or the separation pad which is underneath the paper sheet stack.
If doesn't help you have to replace the separation system (rollers, pad or the whole system).

it happens only when you have used a paper more than 130 gsm. the a4 size paper comes in various width. If you have the paper with width more than 130gsm or you may have inserted the photo paper which normally has the width of 180 gsm, then the functionality of grabbing paper becomes a little loose.
