It's just a figure of speech.

Actually I don't know and I truly, honestly don't care. The first time I recall actually hearing a man being called a "black man" was in Washington, DC by another black man.

In the 37 years since that day I have never heard a black man or woman being call brown or any thing other than black.

i like this question - really get's a discussion going.

My answer would be because the Whitest a white person could turn is actually milk white - when white people on TV visit the Arctic and sh** and then I see their faces.

The blackest a black person can get/ or see them as would be if a black man/woman was to suddenly place theirselves in the Sahara desert for about a month or a little more with total exposure and our skin would almost by a few shades would be pitch black - scarey aint it!

well that's just how I look at it.

otherwise it is just modern society and how we have conformed our selves to accepting 'BLACK' and not crappy words (well i find them crappy) like ***** or coloured - i mean what the F**** is coloured we are all of colour

jeez - i also agree with some previous answers submitted, thanks

i categorize people by their nipple color (which happens to be the same as their lips on the face). some are various shades of brown, some tans, some pinks.
i really do call anyone who is brown brown. except very very very dark people that are truely black. anyway if it's necessary to distinguish someone i'd say man/ woman, or name a shirt color or short/long hair or the lawyer or hairdresser or whatever.

Why are whites called white when most of them have color? And if we called blacks brown, what would we call browns? Light browns? Maybe we'd have a dark brown and a light brown? And call white people extra light brown people? And why are blacks called colored when they stay the same color, but when whites get hit, they turn purple, and when they get mad they turn red, and when they burn they turn red, and when they're sick they turn green, and when they puke they turn actual white, shouldn't whites be called colored?
