I have taught several people in my family and my wife's family, I suggest you learn to drive a stick first, I think you are in more control and pay closer attention as a young driver. My opinion only

Personal choice but I learned to drive an automatic first to get experience and then learned to drive stick. After that even though I knew how to drive an automatic learning to drive stick was pretty wild. You have to do all the extra stuff like turn your turn signal on, push in the clutch, down shift, brake and watch traffic all at the same time. AND now that I have kids automatic is so much easier. Good luck!!

if you are just learning to drive, I would recommend driving an automatic at first to learn the operation of the vehicle, get to know the basics first without all the distractions of shifting and clutching. you need to learn the feel of acceleration and braking, especially in heavy traffic and concentrate on your steering ability and distance between other vehicles and lane centering, you have enough to concentrate on just watching out for the other person without having to complicate it, with shifting and clutching. once you have mastered the automatic(it should not take long) then move into a standard transmission. the hardest part of learning to drive a standard is taking off from a dead stop, you will have to learn how to accelerate lightly and let out on the clutch at the same time to avoid stalling the engine or lurching forward and giving you and whoever else whiplash. learn the basics first, then advance, step by step

Start with a stick. Eventually get an automatic, but it will be great to always know how to drive a stick. Automatics are really simple, but this way you can drive any car!

Most people like the stick, though after a year or so, they regret they didn't buy an automatic.
