i mean when someone tells me to run i'll run, but when someone is chasing u and u get the ball and the adrenaline kicks in thats their real speed, i don't think u can measure that in a stupid test. 2 examples: Jerry Rice had a horrible 40 time but in an actual game he was the fastest to get off the line, and Terell owens not the best 40 time but dam did u see him burn champ bailey last year whoooooo!!!

it has something to do with how fast your are. but it doesnt show game speed which, is the only thing that matters.

thats true. chad greenway out of iowa. didnt have a very impressive combine time. but was drafted fairly high.

but it gives them a general picture of your speed. and quickness.

If you can't run fast in shorts, chances are you can't run fast in pads holding on to a ball being chased by a 235lbs man.

40 times are very very important !!! Nobody ever said a 40 measures a persons true speed. A 40 shows how fast a player is coming out of a stand still going from point A to point B. It also shows what kind of burst they have. Would you draft a guy at RB that runs a 4.9 40 that weighs only 210lbs !!! Or a corner that runs a 4.8 and weighs 195lbs !!! I no I wouldn't !!! I much rather have a back that weighs 210lbs and runs a 4.4 or a 4.5.

Yeah, scouts do put a lot of emphases on a 40, but it's for good reason. Do your research and you'll see that all the elite athletes in the NFL have top notch 40's. Guys like Tomlinson, L. Johnson, Shawn Alexander, Clinton Portis, Edrrin James, Randy Moss, Steve Smith, Mike Vick, Chad Johnson, Tiki Barber, Terrell Owens (4.49), Derrick Brooks, Santana Moss, Champ Baily, Charles Woodson, Ed Reed, Troy Polumolu, Roy Williams.... the list goes on and on man !!!

Jerrry actually ran a sub 4.6 40 !!!

I'm sure you could find a pro soccer player somewhere that is going to rival the 40 time of the fastest NFL player. Who it would be, I don't know - I don't watch soccer. But all those guys do is run, and I assume there must be some soccer player out there that can sprint with the best of them. I tried to find some 40 times for soccer players, but couldn't. So this is like "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop" - the world may never know.

I agree with the question asker. They are good, but the media constantly drools over them. Many players have excellent football speed but lackluster 40 times. Some players with excellent 40 times have only that speed going for them. LT's 40 time, though decent, is actually deceptive of his true football speed.

And Dun Dun, "chances are you can't..." --football speed>40 time because many players can run a 40 very nicely, but their speed craps out when padded and having to concentrate durring the game.

No. You are right.
Scouts refer to players such as " plays faster than timed" good lateral quickness" or even slower than timed speed alot. In draft scouting guides such as Pro football weekly, these are mentioned. The main difference between the positions and WR is that WR's need the straight line speed for deep out routes to flat out burn a defender, and it is a must have or you get labeled a possesion receiver. You can polish your routes and work on your hands to improve you YPC and that really is what matters, Yards after catch.
Look at the NFL and flat out burners with 5 catches in college get drafted higher than ones with 4.6 and 150 catches. I know it is rediculous. Good luck

40 times indicate speed..

yes it truly measures how fast someone is..
just because a WR who is 6'3 220 intimidates a 5'10 190 CB doesent mean hes faster..
