They bite way less than hamsters, it's rare to have a gerbil bite you.
Do NOT get a single gerbil. They are social animals and need to be in pairs. Females are more territorial than males so don't get more than 3.
They don't do good in crittertrail cages or 10 gallon tanks. A 20 gallon long tank is the best choice. Also, don't use pine or cedar shavings as they are dangerous. Carefresh or Aspen shavings are good.

My sister has ton of them, there nice animals but a lot of work. She actully brought them at a petstore and they were suppose to be either 2 male or 2 female well come to find out 1 was male and the other was female and she end up getting more then she plan on.She uses fish tanks as there change and BEWARE DO NOT USE THAT WOOD CHIPPING STUFF THAT MADE FOR HAMSTER/RABBIT GERBILS ARE ALLERGIC TO IT.

I've raised pet gerbils before.

Be very careful about picking them up by the tail...pick them up by the BASE of the tail.

They're pretty tame...they like to climb in people's pockets. Place your hand in the cage and hold still so your gerbils will get used to you.

Make sure they have plenty of things to chew on because their teeth grow...they have to keep their teeth filed down.

The best breed of gerbil to get, from what I've read, is the Mongolian gerbil.

they cook about the same but you will probably want to adjust your recipes. gerbils are a bit more bland than hamsters.
