First, you have to start from scratch. First, if you want to learn to swim really well, why not enroll for swimming lessons? If not, you should ask someone who knows how to swim to teach you. Your mentor should be skilled and patient enough to teach you the basics. After doing that, get a good swimsuit. Sometimes other people swim with shorts and a shirt. This provides underwater resistance.
One shouldn't be afraid of water especially deep water because if you panic you will drown.
Always warm up and never go swimming with a full stomach. This prevents cramps. Believe me, cramps are so painful!
Start by practicing the proper breathing and form. Proper breathing is important if you don't want to get exhausted easily.
Just practice the basics and after mastering that you can go to the more challenging styles.

I'm a good swimmer and here's how I learned to swim. My buddy pushed me to the deep end of a river. I had no choice. Either drown or swim. I did not panic and I floated to safety. I am not suggesting anyone to try this. Go to the Y for training.
