It depends on the player...some use batteries (Creative Muvo) and some have internal, rechargeable batteries (Iriver).

With rechargeable internal batteries you never have to buy batteries so you save money that way, but after few years when that battery's lifecycle* will be over, it will not hold a charge for a long time and you would eventually have to throw out your player.

* Each rechargeable battery has a lifecycle--each time you put your battery to reacharge you waste one "charge time" of that battery. When all "charge times" are wasted, that battery no longer holds its true charge time (8 hrs for example) and will eventually die. That is why it is important to charge those batteries only after they die completely.
