I have bought a pair of earrings which says nickel free. The stick for poking through the ear has tarnish and caused one ear to bleed.

It just means that if you are allergic to nickel you don't have to worry because it does not contain any nickel.

I am extremely allergic to nickel which is in most gold costume jewelry. I get a rash from it. So I would buy jewelry that stated it had no nickel in it. If you are not allergic, don't worry about getting nickel free jewelry.

It means the metal that they are made of has no nickle in its composition. If it's tarnished it could be brass or silver.
