My 2000 neon is leaking oil. Repair shop says it is leaking from the rear main seal. What should it cost me to have this repaired?
(I was told they would have to pull the trans.)

yes they will and it can be pretty expensive too i own a repair shop in Tennessee and have done a few of these,,and usually parts and labor runs about 400 bucks,,this is about what all shops charge,,some more ,some less,,it is a pretty good job to do,,you either have to remove the motor,,or remove the transmission,,either way it is going to take a few days to do,,just make sure you get some one who knows what there doing,,i hope this helps.

It is very costly for that year of vehicle to take to a shop. Remember at times the part you need is inexpnsive but its the labor cost is usually where you get a high bill. Now,also it is the motor that turns your transmission so yes in order to put a rear main seal in you will have to move the trans. if your thinking about doing it yourself its not going to be an easy job by yourself

At around 5 hours labor plus parts and diagnosis, you are looking at a ballpark figure of 470.00 at the dealer for the repair. The transmission or the engine will have to come out to replace the seal. The labor rate may be cheaper at an independant shop.

that is correct the transmission has to be removed when replacing the rear main seal. if manual do it as soon as possible oil could damage clutch. if manual also may want to think about replacing clutch if high mileage and shows signs of excessive wear will save you money in the long run. depending on the labor rate in your area i would say about $600-$800 at most. most likely will be cheaper this is the high end price depending on what engine and motor vehicle is equipped with usually calls for 6-8 hrs labor on most domestic front wheel drive transmissions. parts should not be to expensive either. prices based on $100 shop rate per hr. most independent shops are cheaper than dealers this is dealer price in area i live in

Yes, that is correct. Rear main seal, is next to the transmission. They would have to pull the tranny, and the flywheel to get to the seal. Is gonna be quite expensive on labor. Knowing them, they may say 2 days at least.
