In most cases, chimney caps will prevent most rain coming directly in. Some wind may blow in with certain types of caps. Most of that will spread out on the inner liner of the chimney and evaporate before it reaches your fireplace.

In chimney's without caps, the rain will still come in, but spread on the liner and most will evaporate. Some may reach the bottom, but it won't be much.

If you stick your head up your firebox you will see the damper. This is a trap door which one must open for the smoke to exit your firebox and enter the smoke chamber which then lets the smoke into the chimney. If you do not have a rain cap on your chimney the rain will go down the chimney and into the smoke chamber, if it rains enough the smoke chamber will overflow onto the damper where it will leak if you were to get a large amount of water in the smoke chamber , since the damper is a metal door on a metal frame.Albeit it would take a substantial down pour for this to happen.
