You're better off with a bass amp and a bass cab. The frequencies of bass are different, and you'll lose depth and tonality using a guitar head. Plus, it takes more power to reproduce bass tones, so you're shortchanging your bass by using a guitar head.

Well you can play them on a regular amp if you want to blow the speakers. So, you need a bass amp.

Yes they need amplification. You can plug into a guiter amp but you won't get the fatness and the tone from it. Eventually you'll blow it.
