God yes. I have been to Japan and it is like America on crack.

Yes, Japanese people have a romantic notion of what a wonderful place America is, and what exciting people Americans are - maybe because so many Americans carry guns, at least in the movies which is where Japanese people get their notion of America from! American life is a constant battle between good and evil - yet the all-American good-guy always wins!

David * is right when he says that women are obsessed with Louis Vuitton etc..! They are just coming to the end of an obsession with a certain, spectacle wearing, Korean male actor too! Soon we'll find out who the next gaijin 'celeb' will be!
As for what some people have told you about leg-lengthening operations and eye-opening operations, that's a very extreme example! And while you could find a handful of Japanese people who've had their legs lengthened, I could find just as many Westerners who've had it done!
As for the eye-job, yes I've read about a few women who've had that done, but most of them were porn 'actresses' and the rest were TV presenters..! Neither of those operations are the sort of thing that a normal, ordinary, self-respecting Japanese person would bother doing! (Oh yes, I've also read about Western women having that eye operation...! Some people will do anything...!)

I think that most of Asia wants this lifestyle and that there is an obsession. But, it is America translated and distorted. It is our possessions and freedoms that are so new.
I hope that we can seek to understand them as well because the cultures are both different and both interesting. We should not be smug about it.
