I have a Sony VAIO DVD writer model # PCGA-DDRW1. It has an external power adapter. I want to connect this to my TV to watch DVD movies without a PC. I know I can connect to TV by using a TV tuner card in PC but I want to eliminate the PC in this situation.

unfortunately, this DVD drive is only for your laptop, you can't use it without the laptop, any way if you insist to do this, then you can find an electronic engineer who can design electronic board to convert from DVD drive to TV out, but this will cost you a fortune,
thus by a DVD drive for TV is better,

or I do really think that sony Laptops come already with a video-out connection, thus you can connect the laptop to your TV without the need for a TV tuner card.

In order to run DVD R/Writer you need to have support environment like drivers and some software. Unfortunately we can't do anything with our TV regarding this.
There is no matter of connecting your DVD R/W to your TV.So how I'm sute you can't watch your favourite DVDs in your TV thru DVD R/W

The drive needs to computer to work, you can't just hook it up to the TV, because the TV doesn't have the system or the drivers able to operate it. An external power adaptor has nothing to do with the ability to hook into a TV, it still needs a computer. To watch movies on a TV, you need a computer that can hook into a TV or you need a DVD player for the TV.

Unfortunately, that drive can ONLY connect to a Sony VAIO notebook (over iLink or the DC Out cable) or to a Sony Camcorder that supports iLink.

It's specifically designed for the PC hardware platform and does not have any video output options.

1) Sony DRX-710UL External Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer
Sony’s Double Layer DVD records single layer DVD+R discs at up to 16X speed, burning full discs in a little over 5 minutes. Of course, you can also burn Double Layer DVD+R DL discs with the DRX-710UL, giving you up to 4 hours of MPEG-2 video or up to 8.5GB of data storage space on a single disc.
2) Pioneer DVR-R100
A fast, quiet drive that lets you burn your movies, music, slideshows, and data reliably and fast. You'll be hard-pressed to beat the included software (granted, most are the slightly trimmed-down "Special Edition" variety, but they more than get the job done). In fact, if you haven't made up your mind which video editing software to go with, here's your chance to try out Ulead's excellent VideoStudio and DVD MovieFactory software, and get an excellent DVD burner in the bargain!

You can do this by not even attaching it to your tv ( as long as you have tivo and the computer on a LAN (local area network)
all you have to do is make the tivo play from the dvd drive this is
all done from the computer.
