According to evolutionists, when was evolution proven true, and what was the proof?

I'm not looking for the Creation perspective here, but I am looking for something coherent.

If possible, I'd like whatever proof is given to still be valid. If nobody can nail down a particular year, then a decade, or even a specific quarter-century would be helpful.

I need this for a discussion with my brother.

Well you can't give a date really. It keeps accumulating evidence though.

One of the greatest leaps was when Darwin went on his trip aboard the Beagle. And later when his findings were published.

My guess is that when DNA was discovered to be the transforming principle for transmitting genetic information in the 1940's, the theory was put on firm emperical footing.

Evolution is known to be the effect of species change over time to new species. With genetics and the engine of genetics, DNA, the cause was found for the effect.

No scientific theory has ever been or will ever be 'proved'

There is however sufficient evidence to give the theory of evolution credence. Im sure that you can look the evidence up on wikipedia.

it is only a theory but there is some strong evidence supporting this theory
