Not at all. Ethics and law are both based on rules systems.

Laws are the rules of behavior established by our legislatures and courts. Ethics are the rules of behavior dictated by our employers, our teachers, our professions, the places where we live and work and learn. Both sets tend to be fairly similar, and with the same purpose. The difference is how broad they are in scope, and the potential punishments for violating them.

Just about every profession has ethical rules, and the more educations is required the more likely the rules will be written down. Compare the ethical code of counselors, mediators, psychiatrists and lawyers some time. All have pretty much the same basic requirements for competence, integrity, confidentiality.

Violation of these professional ethical codes can result in the loss of your ability to practice the profession. That holds true in the legal profession as much as any other.

Yes, the idea of an ethical lawyer is a joke. And nobody is more upset about that than the vast majority of lawyers who try to uphold the ethical standards required by the profession. The fact that many (but not most) lawyers violate those standards, or at least bend them, is just as sickening to most attorneys as the psychiatrists who sleep with their patients, or doctors who commit gross malpractice are offensive to members of those professions.

lol, dont ask a lawyer that question he or she will tell u that all lawyers stand by the higest ethicial standards, then charge you 1 hour plus cost and copies.
