Seems like I spend more time fighting viruses, updating spyware, wondering if my Anti virus has been disabled, than I do getting work done. Are there viable alternatives to Windows which are less likely to be attacked?

If you are having this much trouble with controlling viruses on windows then switching to either linux/unix/mac os x would probably be a huge shock to your system. Get AVG, Spybot search and destroy, and Adaware all freely available from www.download.com. The biggest thing is practice safe surfing use some common sense and don't donwload everything that presents itself.

"get e machines at cicuit city and be shure to get norton antivirus spyware"

Don't use norton most virus exploits are written for norton or mcafee so stay away from them they also don't seem to pick up as much some lesser used ones. The type of computer doesn't matter every computer is as susceptible as another depending on the user.

"2. install linux on your computer."
"5. NOT buy a mac. Overpriced and underachieving. "

These two things almost contradict each other due to the fact that OS X is based upon linux/unix so I'm not sure how it can be underachieving it just presents an easier to use secure form of linux/unix with a pretty GUI and good hardware that is known to work together. Also macs are no longer so expensive mac minis are quite affordable and you can use you existing monitor and keyboard and mouse (assuming they are USB)

As hard is it to hear this is mainly your fault just be a little safer and windows will be fine, I have only ever gotten 1 virus under windows and have experience with linux and unix and though both offer fantastic alternatives you will need to probably learn a good bit.

Well you could use a linux distribution, there are few attacks on these unless you are running a web server. Any computer is vulnerable to attack, its just the MACs and Linux boxes are not the target as often as windows based machines.

This is why I got a mac. I had it for 2 years without installing a virus checker and did just fine. No spyware or anything. I finally installed ClamXav (a free virus checker) because people are starting to write mac malware, but it's nowhere near as bad as it is for windows.

You have a few choices:
1. stop going on dangerous sites.
2. install linux on your computer.
3. Do system restore every time you get a virus. (control panel--performance/maintenance, left side)
4. Believe in stupid antivirus programs that do little.
5. NOT buy a mac. Overpriced and underachieving.

I recomend step 3.

The computer is a dumb machine that only does what we tell it to. Only open e-mails from people you know, do not open attachments unless you are sure they are "clean." Yahoo mail is good for that. I tried to open what I thought was a legitimate e-mail and Yahoo prescanned it with Norton and wouldn't allow me to - they said it contained a worm. Set your antivirus program for automatic update so you don't have to remember to do it. Be careful where you go and what you download. Someone is always trying to get his jollies by messing somebody else up.

Linux. But, it seems like you're not too computer literate... so just stick with Windows.
