My friend says it was sometime during the 1950's. But I think it was in the 15th century when the Ottomans took over. Who is right?

oooops, you're right it's not the capital. So I guess I should rephrse it to "major city" instead.

The name of the city was officially changed in 1930, when Attaturk created the Republic of Turkey.

But it seems highly likely to me that the name had been in popular use ever since the Ottoman Turks captured the city in 1453.

Istanbul is not the capital city of Turkey. Ankara is the capital.

I'm not sure when the name was changed from Constantinople, but I think it was sometime in the 15th century.

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night
Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be waiting in Istanbul
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way
So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks
Istanbul (Istanbul)
Istanbul (Istanbul)
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way
Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks
So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks
Istanbul
