They're definately after the salts. They like sipping urine, too. I found that out the hard way about human urine when traveling in the tropics. At certain times of the year in coastal Brazil, it's kinda hard to take a leak in the bush without getting butterflies in yer undies! ;-)

yeah but only very rare few butterflies prefer rotting animal flesh or animal fluids. But most of the butterflies only sip liquid food using a tube-like proboscis, which is a long, flexible tongue. This proboscis uncoils to sip food, and coils up again into a spiral when not in use. Most butterflies live on nectar from flowers.

Some species tend to search for salty solutions, and dogs' excrements are rich on them, specially if dog's fed on pellets.

it is not sat but the irresistible smell!! butterflies find food by smell.
some butterflies love strange smells and are attracted to poo, pee, sweat or even to strange-smelling solvents!!!
i too have seen plenty butterflies attracted to poo, the worse-smelling, the better. they suck the "yummy" juices of it. uurrggh

They suck up the salt. They don't eat.
