One of the characteristics of the Italian renaissance was that they were leading the world in the revival of mathematics. Some of the others were great literature, architecture, painting, sculpting... Leonardo Da Vinci, Giovanni Bellini, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, etc

one interesting thing---they apparently discovered how to project an image using optics which allowed far more realistic and detailed paintings. and they kept it as a trade secret.
