Most states now require you to have social skills training, as well as training in sociology, psychology and mediation and possibly nursing skills. As with any job, pay is generally determined by experience, amount of training and how capable you are in doing the job.
Try calling a few dependency centers, and see if they can offer some insight into the requirements. Ask to talk to a dependency counselor. That's where I'd start. Good luck!

I went to college in CA. All I needed was a Chemical Abuse
Counseler Certificate. It was to take a year or so. I took a sem.,
1/2. I used to join other counslers in session, but was told to
not ask questions, just listen. Like an intern. I hope you really go
ahead and do this sort of work, there is a GREAT need for help
in this field!! I also got to work in a locked treatment facility for
teen girls. It was the best experience and most rewarding job I
have EVER had. I would still be there, but it was closed down.
I learned alot. I had to chart their behaviour, and I guess I was a
resident staff or whatever. But, even SOME college helps get
your foot in the door. Get some college under your belt. No one
can ever take that from you !! Look into all your resources...
And YES, some places will hire you, without a degree, as long
as you used to have a drug or alcohol problem, and have stayed
clean for years, they will let you train. Good Luck !....

You need a Chemical Dependency Counselors License. (CDL) You need to get it through the state obviously, so go to the New York State Website and browse licenses.

Yes you do. You need to graduate from college for one. Being an ex addict isn't qualification enough.
