Could be numerous reasons. Too much caffeine, too much stress, sleeping disorder. So, avoid things with caffeine. De-stress before going to bed, by meditation (sounds corny I know, but for some people it works), by creating a plan of action for dealing with the stress or try putting it on the back burner. Also, sitting around a lot during the day and not getting your blood moving could be another reason, so exercise. Your mattress could not be supporting you comfortably, so you can't fall asleep. Read a boring book (like a textbook). Take a hot shower/bath before going to bed. The temperature could be a problem; if you're too hot and can't do something like make the room colder with a/c, try blowing a fan or two across your bed or go to bed with your hair slightly damp. Avoid using your bed for other than sleep or sex; if you study or read books or play games from your bed, your mind subconsciously associates your bed with the activities and you don't sleep as well. Sleep disorders may require going to see a doctor or even a sleep clinic (you go to the clinic to sleep overnight and there are people monitoring you...that how my dad was diagnosed with sleep apnea or stopping breathing while asleep...disrupts the sleep cycle).

heat up some milk so it is warm and drink it...works for some people, also, get comfy and concentrate on centering your tounge so that it is not touching anything in your mouth, and allow that to relax...because it is such a big muscle and one that is usually involved when stressed, that centering and relaxing seems to help peole sleep.
