Ask yourself, do my parents even know how to type? Perhaps they are intimidated. I know my dad refuses to surf because he thinks there are traps waiting for him. I know it sounds werid, but until we can get an authority figure to vouch for the safe practice of research were all gonna have problems with the parent set.

It's because some parents didn't grow up in the Internet age and know the values of such Technology.
When I was junior high (1987), I begged my mom to buy me a computer because everyone had one. My mom wouldn't get me one until 10th Grade.
My mom was also against the Internet. She thought that it was a distraction. She didn't see the use of it. Now she's on it and she checks it on a daily basis.
When I was a senior in high school (1993), having your own beeper/pager was considered the in thing. We didn't have cell phones. Having your own car to drive to school was considered a sign of independence.
As technology expands, you'll see it infiltrate the market and get used so that people will understand its value. When you become a parent, you'll understand the value of the Internet because you used it for homework whereas your parents didn't.
If you've never used it, you can't really appreciate it as much. It's like trying new food. There are so many foreign dishes and cuisines that the youth of today don't eat. They'd prefer fastfood and something recognizable.
A lot of foreign foods are healthy and good for you. However, because it's different and most young people have never tried it, they'd prefer to stick to stuff they recognize like pizza, hamburgers, fries, and American dishes.
Because you've done without foreign food, it's no loss to you if you don't try it.
It's the same thing with parents that don't actively use the Internet. They've done without it so they don't have a pull or need for it the same way their children do.
There's also the issue of Adult Content. Because the Internet is still in its "Wild West" Stages, parents still haven't figured out how to screen content so that their children won't be exposed to Sexual Material.
Sex is a taboo subject and the fear is that access to the Internet will corrupt their children sparking them to take an interest in sexual practices that the parent may disapprove of.
Parents will always disapprove of anything that is an expression of adulthood. On an unconscious level, it marks the weakening of authority as the child graduates to an adult and is able to make decisions independent of the Parent.
Parents are Authority Figures. The last thing a parent wants is to lose authority or control over their child. The Internet is an uncontrolled resource with a wealth of information. Information is Power.
Some parents also fear having to face the task of explaining sex to their children. So it would be peace of mind by not having the Internet in the house altogether. Though by making the Internet banned in the household, children or teens will just find another outlet or way of accessing it.
There's also a lot of bad publicity circulating amongst parents with horror stories of how their children or teens become morally corrupt when they're plugged into the Internet and exposed to unacceptable information that corrupts young minds.
However, the remedy for that is education vs. sheltering them from it. In the long run, you end up endangering children and teens by not educating them and avoiding the issue.

The internet, like any other homework helping utility (say Coles Notes, for example) can become THE way a student does homework, instead of a HELP for a student to do homework. Students were doing homework LONG before the internet came into being. Try your best to figure your work out for yourself. If you can't, ask for help from a friend your your parents/guardians and especially your teacher. I know it isn't the answer you are looking for, but it is true none-the-less. You'll feel so much more proud of yourself when YOU get the right answer!

Well, a big reason is that there is very little accountability on the internet. I mean there are sights online that are in no way meant to be serious and yet people treat them as being something real.
Another problem with accountability is that a lot of information is gotten off personal content which is loaded with impressions and even made up facts. Wikipedia got slammed hard for that when some people were rewriting their own biographies on there.
The internet is a good tool, but if you are going to use it, you really need to spend even more time double checking your work, just in case you are taken in with the wrong information.
The following site recieved a lot of hate mail and was threatened with legal action several times because people really believed that there were "Bonsai Kitten" enthusiasts callously stuffing kittens into bottles and tube feeding them for the rest of their lives.

Parents don't want their children to rely on an unmoderated, unregulated compendium for factual information. There is some proof that one tends to believe things that they read (you know, "I read it, so it must be true!"). The internet is a useful tool but there are a lot of other sources for information that are reliable and accurate. It's great to get a loose outline or to find out what actual documents to use but the internet itself and prticularly random website, annot be cited as sources for papers and projects. Also there is for anyone using the internet for research to sway from what they are doing, since there are so many other things to read and to be distracted by.

Because the internet, while helpful, is also helping to foster a generation of idiots. Kids today are being raised to depend totally on computers which is absolutely stupid. Everyone should know how to research through an encylopedia on their own; everyone should know how to use a card catalog; everyone should know how to spell without depending on spell checker...
Additionally, did you know that some schools aren't even teaching kids cursive writing anymore? Some of the theory I've heard is that it's "outdated" and that kids won't need to worry about writing their names if they're just typing it. That's a load of hogwash...kids are being taught to be dependent on a machine instead of knowing how to do anything for themselves. They're gonna be in bad shape when there's not a computer nearby!

Its not a problem for parents when there kids ARE actually using the net for only homework and assignments...they are against it when their kids are checking out porn, and meeting serial killers posing as an adolescent!

Well if it's for school they shouldn't be against it. It could be that the kids say they are doing research but in reality they are just chatting or going on sites that have nothing to do with school. If it's your parents who are against it, offer to let them "check-up" while you are on the net when you say you are working on school projects and if you really are, that should put them at ease.

It's called:
Internet Predators.
Identity Theft.
Just to start. There is so much nastiness out there that parents instinctively want to shield their kids.
Don't talk to me about having to learn sometime and there is always risks. Parents want what is best for you, and they know the risks, far better than you do sometimes.
Please listen to your parents. Enjoy as much childhood as you can, it is over so quickly.
