When you pop the hood release, a spring causes the hood to open slightly. When you open the hood, you may need to manually put the "prop rod" in place to hold the hood open. The hood may have spring loaded hinges, or there may be a pressurized "hood shock" that holds it open.

Latch releases the hood spring lifts the hood slightly. Then find the safety catch release lift the hood. Prop rods hold the hood up when opened or some are held up with shock absorber like " Hood Struts" that are designed to fail a few years down the road after the warranty runs out

If you mean the rod that folds out and holds up the hood it's called the "hood prop" . The one's that stay up on their own is provided by the hood hinge springs

The parts breakdown for my Honda Prelude lists it as:
Stay, Hood open.
http://www.thehondapartsstore.com/herson/jsp/prddisplay.jsp?inputstate=5&catcgry1=PRELUDE&catcgry2=1990&catcgry3=2DR+2.0S&catcgry4=KA5MT&catcgry5=HOOD&ListAll=All&vinsrch=no
While the part is obviously a prop... it is actually a "stay".
Good luck!

You may be talking about the release spring. Otherwise it is the prop, strut (gas shock), or springs.
