From Chapter One

"...her hair the color of sun-dappled straw..."=metaphor (comparing without like or as)

"...Lou was filling the blank pages with writings of importance to her, as a fisherman does his net..."=simille (using like or as)

"...The air was moist..."=personification (human qualities to animals or objects)

Check out the resource, it is a great site for Literary terms. Hope this helps.

similies are comparisons between two unalike things using "like" or "as." For example, "I am happy as a clam." Metaphors are comparisons not using those words. For example, "I am the walrus, coo koo ca choo." Personification is giving human-like characteristics to animals or inanimate objects.

Okay, I haven't read that book, but for similies, look for the words "like" or "as" e.g. slippery AS a fish
For personification, look for animals or objects that have feelings (e.g. the door groaned under the pressure of the...) groaning is something that only animate objects really do.

Simile: Comparison using 'like' or 'as' - Example: He acts like a monkey on crack.

Metaphor: Comparison that does not use 'like' or 'as' - Example: She stripped out of her clothes faster than a horse barrels out of the starting line.

Personification: Acting like an inanimate object or something similiar, like an idea or concept, is a person. Example: Death followed me everywhere I went.

if it's a comparison that's got like or as in it it's a simile
if it's a comparison which doesn't have like or as in it, it's a metaphor
if you see an inanimate object with human qualities, it's personification.
