I think my daughter is fat and she does think so too. She's 12, 5'1'' and about 110lbs. She wears girls size 16 in clothes. Ideally she should be girls size 12 as she is 12 and about avg height. We are worrying because if she is wearing 16yr old girls clothes now, what would she be wearing at 16? plus size? she barely started puberty and we are both worried about her getting fat. She is almost heavy as me and I am 5'6''!

I think it's best if she goes on a diet?

She is not fat. She is at perfectly healthy weight for her height and at her age could very well thin out even more. I think the real problem is you. You should never refer to your child as fat. It will damage all self confidence and possibly lead to eating disorders. Don't measure your child based on yourself, look at her as the individual she is. Besides as I said before she is not fat check her BMI at http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/welcome/bmicalculator.html and see for yourself. If you still think you should do something, set a good example. Stop buying junk food, fast food, sodas or things with a high sugar content. Encourage at least an hour of physical play/exercise. Doing it with her is best. Limit t.v. and computer playing to no more than an hour a day. Make sure she eats three meals a day and two snacks...this is actually the best way to lose weight and keep it off try this site for examples of a good days menu http://www.kraftfoods.com/kf/HealthyLiving/MealPlanner/MealPlanner.htm Most importantly, you should be there to support her, not to criticize her. Good luck to you and your daughter.

Do not put her on a diet. make sure she eats all the right foods and not so much junk now that she has hit puberty but she will grow taller and itll make her look more fit. the number on your clothes and how old you are have nothing to do with one another and a size 16 in childrens is just about a 2 in teen clothing and it is FINE! she is skinny and you shouldnt tell your barely teen daughter she is fat. help her make better eating choices and maybe talk to a dietician to find a good skedual for her. i weighed 126 pounds when i was that age and i was a pretty skinny muscular girl. Muscle weighs more then fat as well and you shouldnt make her loose any weight but help her stay healthy. You are too skinny youself and should put on a little weight to stay healthy. work out with her and eat more protein and healthy food.
good luck

She is only 12, so you control what she eats. Try to make healthier choices to her daily food intake. No soda is a good way to lose a few lbs. Some kids drink nothing but soda, we all need water, water, water. Always keep fruit around as a snack, I think my kids would live off fruit if they could. Get out and get active with your daughter, even if you just go walking, it can also be a good time to get to know her a little better, the longer you walk the longer you can talk. Good luck.

No, a dieting 12 year old is just a ticket to an eating disorder. Just make sure she limits the snack food and get her moving more.....no sitting in front of the tv for hours. My 14 year old daughter and I walk 3 miles a day after dinner and it has truly brought us closer together as well as helped keep us fit.

go on a diet. now that gives people the wrong idea.... a diet is simply what you eat.. is your daughter eating healthy foods? is she eating correct portion sizes? if she's eating fast food all the time, then stop- it's not healthy. but if she's not over-eating and you think she's 'fat'- which isn't very good for her self-esteem by the way- then make sure she's getting exercise. sign her up for some type of sport. dancing, swimming, basketball... anything.. as long as she eats healthy and is getting some type of physical activity every day then she will be fine.

OK...u are OBVIOUSLY confused here. You don't wear clothes sizes based on your AGE!! What about the people who wear size 0??? what about the 83 year old women?? do they have to wear a size 83??? THINK! Just because she is 12 doesn't mean she should wear a 12.

As a former fat kid, I totally resented my mother for a long time putting me on a "diet". What if you change the food that is in your house, or take family walks, and model positive changes. Don't make it about her. She is at a pivotal stage in her life (I am also a sixth grade teacher) and is developing her self esteem and body image. Try and teach her to love the body she has, what ever the weight is and that is why she should treat it well. I just saw on Dr. Phil that if you give up regular soda you can lose up to 25lbs. a week. Teach her to think wonderful thoughts about her body and healthy thoughts about food.
