The bomb did indeed have a parachute and exploded about 1885 feet above the ground. As soon as the bomb left the bomb bay the plane did a sharp banking manueuver to get as far away in the opposite direction before the bomb exploded at the preset altitude.

The plane in question...the Enola Gay...A ..B-17.was stripped down of all armor and weapons..et. to increase her speed. The U.S. flew many propaganda missions over the area...dropping flyers and such.. at the same time for weeks...the people became complacent...no longer shooting at the B-17 's that came over...they were not a threat...until the big BOOM....it did not have a chute..as it needed to penetrate the surface before detonation....

No it didnt, it was a 'freefall' weapon, dropped from 26,000 feet from the B29 called Enola Gay..It was a surface burst yeilding about 10 kilotons [10,000 tons of tnt] of very loud bang!..But it probably saved upwards of a million American and allied lives!..Justified??..hmmm!

no, it was dropped from about 6000 ft, enola gay was doing about 300 mph and the total destruction area was about one mile. the three planes that did the fly-over were 10 miles away when it went off..80,000 people died instantly. the war ended one day later
