I've noticed that almost all of the movies and TV shows I've seen (and books too) describe "extraterrestrials" as being hairless and of a much greater intelligence. Honestly, they always seem to be bald and super smart...why? Any thoughts?

They're stereotyped as being super-smart because since they've already got the technology to travel to another (ours) planet, something that we don't have yet, the aliens are automatically smarter than we are / a few steps ahead of us. Why they're cast as being bald probably has to do with the descriptions of them in stories of people who claim to have been abducted. Those are my best guesses.

In the earlier days of Hollywood they always had 2 eyes and 4 limbs - just like us. And just like most animals here on earth.

I'm not sure but I think it was Star Trek that got the brilliant idea that an alien life form could possibly be...
not like us! And so now there are aliens that are insects, or have no physical body at all, etc. This is isn't all Hollywood. Scientists say the same thing - if there is another life form out there, it may not resemble us at all. Or be intelligent.

Don't know why their hairless - I guess this has to do with us evolving from the apes and reflects how we have become less hairy over time? (well, some of us...)

I suspect the aliens in movies are there to project ourselves upon, esp when they resemble us (a head, 2 eyes, 4 limbs) As if "this is what we will be turning into" someday.

Yeah, I love it.

According to the trekkies (and the rest of them) the only difference between all the races in the universe is where the spots and bumps and bits of hair are on our heads.

And somehow super-intelligent races which have mastered FTL travel thousands of years before us are somehow dumber than us. No matter what they have at their disposal plain old Captain Lance from planet Earth will outwit them.

Bald = super smart (notice the avatar!) :-D

I think it comes from the first descriptions of the Roswell aliens.

Supposedly all of them have IQs over 600, and are taking all the reliable jobs from human beings. they have also discovered a criminal thanks to stay away from paying taxes, yet our tiny brains can't understand the guidelines in touch, so that they're a drain on human taxpayers. that's ironic that the teabaggers, who characterize the low end of human intelligence, were acceptable about extraterrestrial beings all alongside.
