there are sprays at petstores where it stops the animal from chewing in an area, and it is safe too. you should go to your local petstore or like petsmart or petco or something and ask them about it. im sure theyll be happy to help you out.

I had a mouse who did this a lot before I moved him to an aquarium. Some small animals are just so persistant that they will continue a behaviour to the point of injuring themselves.
I know it's probably a pain and might feel like a waste of money, but if you've tried chew toys and it still continues to chew the bars, one of your last options is switching to a solid home, like an aquarium. You might be able to use the cage again in the future for a different pet, but an aquarium shouldn't cost you too much.
A 10 gallon tank is large enough for a hamster, just make sure you also get a tightly fitting metal mesh or wire lid. Depending on how big the cage was, this might give you more floorspace for toys too. Does he have a wheel? This often helps stop annoying behaviour and helps to burn energy.

he is bored. he wants out of his cage because it is too small. either get him a bigger cage or connect a 2nd cage to his with tubes. if u cant do that then buy him a hamster wheel and let him run until he stops. sometimes a couple hours every day. when he chews again hes telling u he wants in his ball. make sure to use tape on the ball because the lid often pops open. with one of my hamsters all i do is open the cage door & hold the ball up and sh e crawls right in. trust me - this is the problem and one of these options will solve. it. if u just put that smelly spray on the bars u arent solving the problem. and if u get a glass cage but its not huge (below 30 inches in length is too small)he'll still be unhappy but wont be able to tell u with chewing. he doesnt want more chews of any kind- when they are chewing for 20-30 seconds thats for their teeth - longer than that is bordeom. if u want him to be happy u have to do one or even both of the things i suggested. good luck!

I have a Drwarft and I have had hamsters when my kids were small and they all like chewing on the cage , No matter what, they just try to get out of the cage!! You probaly can't stop him from chewing on it!! But you could try hanging up a Salt Wheel to see if he'll chew on it, And you can hang up a Treat Stick for him to chew on, Just laying wood on the bottom of the cage won't do, They love those Treat Logs, i guess they still sell those at the pet store or walmart? I'd get one of those, he'll get destracted by it hopefully and Chew on it , cause it taste good to them and keeps them busy!!! Be sure to hang it or tie it on to the cage, don't lay it down on the ground, make him climb for it !!

If the hamster is chewing its cage then get a new cage with safe sides and get a spray to protect your hamster from chewing on the sides.

Maybe more exercise. Does he have a wheel? I had a gerbil that was the same way...would all ways wake me up at night chewing so loud on the bars of the cage. Maybe you can put him in an aquarium with a screen lid on it.

If it's a Hertz cage all hamsters chew through them. You may need to switch to an aquarium. This is what I had to for my hamster. When she began chewing through her Hertz cage. Habitrail is my cage of choice but they are gosh darn expensive these days.
