No you can not you ned cd-r and their is a huge differance between dvd+r and dvd-r. the dvd-r is used to save things like slideshows but dvd+r is used to save actual videos and you may have some problems reading them if they are not entered correctaly : )

You can save your music to a DVD-R. Will only play on your computer though.
The difference between CD and DVD is that DVD can hold much more info.

CD= 780 MB
DVD= 8 GB (or 8,000 MB)
Double Layer =16 GB (or 16,000 MB)

If you decide to record home movies or slide shows with music here's a heads up.
Different DVD players play different formats.
My Bose LS 28 HTS will play +R's bun not -R's
but my cheap Toshiba DVD player will play both formats.
Its a guessing game. If You need to, record the same info on both formats (+R & -R)
Good luck to you and I hope this helps. :)

I am assuming that since you are in the tivo/dvr section, the DVD recorder is an external consumer device. If that is the case then no, the device is only design to record onto blank DVD media. Think of it like your VHS VCR deck. You can record audio on the VHS machine but it will only be in the VHS format.

You can record audio onto the dvd recorder. You will have more space on the DVD media (~ 4GB) of space compared to a CD-R media (700MB). [ 1GB is equal to 1000MB ] . I added a link below that talks about recording audio on a dvd recorder.
