I think it is so they have someone to love and who loves them...

Probably but dont assume someone is actually homeless just because they're out panhandling - I worked in a food stamp office and was shocked to learn how many people pose as homeless! I had to interview them and you wouldnt believe the things they told me! Some people do this instead of work, and actually make very good money doing it, and will take their dogs with them for a "sympathy factor" as one put it. I'm afraid this really jaded me against giving to any that ask - I hate that the knowledge hardened me against sympathy towards all of the homeless, because now I look at them and wonder, and dont often give.

When I was a teen, I turned to my dog for affection and unconditional love and loyalty to get me through those difficult years. I felt close to him and leaned on him a lot. He slept on my bed, licked my tears, and never argued or criticized me. He also protected me from strangers on occasion.....he was a German Shepherd. He was my best friend. He needed me and I needed him.
I think those are a few good reasons homeless people have dogs.

I've seen some with serious dogs but most looked like the dog was his only real friend.

Maybe, but more likely it's because they are lonely. Humans need to give love and enjoy companionship and humans are so hard to deal with.
