Why do you need an invitation for a GMAIL account? Isn't those accounts just like Yahoo! or Hotmail? Why not go to the site and find out if you can generate an account on your own?
I have never used GMail but it seems silly to need an invitation as that would hamper their ability to get users, and users are how they get advertisers to want to place ads on the site. So there should be a method of signing up without an invitation. Unless it is a beta version like when Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! both began allowing certain users to communicate with either one regardless which one you have.
Good luck figuring out how to get the account you want. What is wrong with having a Hotmail (now windows live) Yahoo? I think both those are pretty darn good mail programs. Especially as the are free. Well, the basic accounts are free, you have to pay a small fee for the better versions without the ads and ohter good features.

gmail's great... but you can sign up on your own now.
they had the invitation only to make sure that people would talk about it...
they have the best ads... relevant and to the point. no flashing hit the monkey ads... just relevant text ones
the space they offer is more than I'll ever use
they allow pop access, which yahoo doesn't.
gmail organises e-mails into conversations.... it's amazing how clever this idea is.
but no... I'm sure people are happy with spam city hotmail. really.
gmail has an *** kicking spam blocker too, by the way. I haven't had one piece of spam missed.
and I loved all the ads all over my yahoo... before I blocked them all in Firefox.
while you're checking out gmail... check out firefox. free, fast, customizable, safer, more up to date... and no, you don't have to get rid of Idiot Exploiter... uh Internet Explorer.

I don't see what the big deal is with googles e-mail, there are plenty of other e-mail programs out there.
