If your dad is a veteran, he can go to the VA Hospital.. They're now offering smokers the change to quit, via pills, patch, and ???
He may have to take a class or two, which is normal.. as they'll explain how these patches work.
My son and hubby are on the patch (son is also on the pills as well). Both will have vivid dreams, and hubby and I won't be sleeping together for a while.. due to flash backs (Nam Vet).. I've dodged too many blows before from his dreams..
If your dad is not a veteran, maybe some regular hospitals are offering this.. call and ask around.
Good Luck to your dad, sweetie.. and to you as well

Well, I totally understand why you are scared. Lungs aren't the only thing affected by smoking. So your Dad still has all sorts of health risks as a result of this awful habit.
But, frankly, your Dad has made his decision to keep smoking, despite the well known health hazards. You can tell him you love him and ask...even beg...him to stop, but ONLY HE CAN DO IT. He's got to want to. You can't make the decision for him, so get on with your life. Love him as long as you have him. Who knows...he might be one of the lucky ones that beats the odds and lives a long and happy life. I hope so. Good luck.

I too have smoked for over 40 years and my lungs are okay except for an occasional bout of bronchitis....BUT, I lost both of my parents to lung cancer and after trying many many times to quit, I just couldn't....I finally cut back from 1 pack a day to a pack a week....When Peter Jennings died, I quit cold turkey and have been smoke free for one year and four months....Tell your dad it is not too late...if I can do it, anyone can.....I can't run like I used to without panting real hard and I have a hard time catching my breath....I'm getting better one day at a time....Good luck "Sweetie" and God bless you!

Well, Melissa- your dad is the one who has to decide to stop smoking. And after 43 years, the odds are against that, unless something drastic happens.
Does your dad know you're scared? Or talk to your mother or someone else where you are.
Good luck!

Parents feel quilty when you bring these subjects up. It sometimes gives them a push in the right direction. Talk to him and let him know that you are scared for him. Use your best crying and add things like "i don't want my daddy to die!"....LOL...course, my mom just got mad when I used to tell her that crap....maybe it'll work for you though!

Have you ever told your dad how much his smoking worries you? May be that would make him thinking about quitting.

You should worry about yourself too because if your dad has been smoking near you for years you can have cancer.
