I don't know where the heck you read that.
1) There were no real catacombs up until the middle ages, since they were part of the church establishment.
2) There was plenty of food!!
3) "Europeans" as such didn't exist yet! There were Romans, barbarians, arabs, jews, egyptians, etc. The Romans were not known for eating people.
