a pap consists of the doctor or nurse inserting a speculum (to open the vaginal area slightly) and then using a long swab to take cell samples from the cervix...this can be uncomfortable to slightly painful, but is over in just a minute or two. The pelvic exam is usually the doctor examining the external areas as well as palpating (pushing and feeling) around your lower abdomen and inside the vagina to be sure the placement of the uterus is normal...this too can be a little uncomfortable, but the whole process (pap and pelvic) is usually done in 5 minutes unless they need to examine further. A lot of times docs will also do a breast exam to feel for any unusual lumps and depending on your sexual activity, they may test for STD's such as gonorrhea (which takes just a drop of blood from your finger).
Sometimes you'll experience some mild cramping and light spotting for a few hours after the exam - this is normal and is caused by the doctor pressing in and around your cervix during the exam.

A nurse should be present if it is a male doctor and you are underage. You will be asked to place your feet in stirrups and scoot until you reach the edge of the exam table. The doctor will sit on a low stool and turn on a light to see. He will insert a plastic speculum ( a horse shoe looking instrument) into your vagina. He will open it with a few clicks and look inside. He will take a long q-tip and a long wooden spatula (looks like an orange wood stick for pushing back cuticles with a flat edge) and take a few cell scrapings from your cervix. You will feel it, but it will not hurt. He may then insert some fingers to feel your cervix while pressing on your belly. The whole process takes less than 5 minutes. It will feel like a slight pressure and/or a pinch as he opens the speculum. It should not hurt.
Don't be afraid or embarassed. If you have questions, ask. Remember that this is a necessary exam once a year to ensure your good health and catch any abnormalities while they are in the early stages. Its just part of being a woman.

The pap smear will feel like a very little pinch at worst. The pelvic exam is painless. FYI - my experience is that female doctors are gentler with this than male doctors.

The doctor will use an instrument to open the vagina so he or she can see the cervical area. They will scrape the cervical area to get tissue samples to make sure you are healthy, and cancer free. Then they remove the instrument from you put lubricating gel on two gloved fingers, insert their fingers in your vagina and exam your total pelvic area. They are able to check your ovaries and your uterus plus everything else. There will be some discomfort and pressure felt when the doctor examines you. I hope your doctor is gentle.

I've never had a male doctor, I went to a female doctor and she was very nice and gental. They will stick something up there to test it and they will also feel around the area for any bumps that may be of concern. It doesn't hurt but you will feel them moving around up there and you need to try and keep your body relaxed. I was scared my first time but it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be and it's really a necessary thing to have done.

you'll feel embarassed...it's not painful or anything, it's just uncomfortable being spread eagle with your feet in stirrups covered in a paper towel gown. but it's quick, less than 60 seconds from start to finish.
