Messes up your engine,particularly if you have what's become known as an "interference" engine - one in which the valves will smack into the piston tops if the timing belt breaks. BIG damage.

No, the only thing that it could damage would be to bend valves. Most likely not. Just put the motor in time and put a new timing belt in it. Good luck.

when the timing belt goes out it wont mess up the trany . but if you are driving the car and it break the vaules can hit the pistons and mess up the motor

It will do nothing to your transmission.
If it is a non-interferance engine, nothing will happen, except it will not run. Until you git it fixed.
Should you have an interferance engine, it will really mess things up. Bent rods, valves, possibly cracked head or block. that's what happens when you introduce pistons to valves in a running engine.
