there's probably nothing you can do to stop it, if the power's that be in your job think he deserves the move. chances are, however, that more than one person shares your view and has probably mentioned it to the management. just because he thinks he will make it, doesn't mean he will.

if all else fails, and he gets the position, vaseline the door handles on his car. if he leaves it unlocked, place a raw dead fish under his seat. don't forget to ketchup his window. if he doesn't have a car, these things can work well in his new office. just don't get caught.

I would request five minutes with the top dog at your office and discreetly let it be known that, while I recognized his/her ability to make sound decisions for the best of the office, I felt it necessary to bring it to his/her attention that the jackass is *not* the person to put into the position without LOADS of training and that since he announced he was applying for the position, there have been rumblings about a mass exodus by coworkers. I would emphasize that I know everyone is replaceable and that I wasn't trying to pull a power play, but that I wouldn't feel comfortable coming to work everyday and facing the boss knowing that folks were contemplating a mutiny, and that I felt it was my responsibility to make it known how the office felt about the jackass being considered for the position.

There probably isn't anything you can do to prevent him trying to get the job, but if he is an ***, he may not get it. Relax, things may catch up with this guy. Chances are if he acts this way towards you, it may be a pattern with him. It won't take him too long to create a real fan base of people that want him out the door if he does get the job. .

Basically, you're screwed. You have very few options....yes, you can just apply for the job yourself.... (but chances are, since he already applied for it, management already knows about it, may have their mind made up, and you may seem like a copycat.) You can go to management to say something, but then what?.... you will come off as being immature and a complainer and actually may hurt your own chances of being promoted in the future. what would you say to the promoter? "Oh, I don't like him....he shouldn't get the position b/c he's a jackass! I have issues with him.." You know how they will respond? They will say, "You're gonna have to learn to deal with it," or "you have to learn to work with other people well even if you don't like them."

Is he actually qualified for the position? (Are you?) If he gets it, you're gonna have to deal with it, and you will have to suck up to him. He might be "in" with the bosses, too, so watch out how you approach things....

I've been in retail way too long, trust me, I know what I'm talking about!

I agree with girlinblack, go to the top person and let it be known what this jerk is really like among his coworkers. Don't be negative or bash the guy, this just shows your lack of maturity. Be calm, cool and clearly state yours and your coworkers opinions about the jerk.
Also, do your job to the best of your ability so the jerk won't have any reason to write you up - if, God forbid he gets the job.
My guess is that upper management already knows what a jerk he it.
