A natural birth is always best, if possible, because every pain medication carries with it some risk (although small) to mother and baby. Pain medication can actually stall labor, too, and make the baby sluggish after birth. This happened to me and caused difficulty with the breastfeeding.

If you can do it without pain meds, go for it. What is essential is a GOOD nurse/doctor/midwife who will be there to encourage you when the going gets tough and contractions start getting more painful towards the end.

This is my third pregnancy and I'm going without the epidural this time. Woo hoo!!

Its no where near bad as people say because they only tell you the bad bits.If you want a natural birth with no drugs i would recommend a water birth. I have had two children and two different types of birth, i had one one the bed and one in a water pool. The water is soothing so the pain isn't so bad down below either. Also with a water birth the midwives let you get on with it and don't keep messing as things progress more naturally in water. Talk to your midwife and see what options you have and ask about a water birth. If i ever have anymore i wont think twice about it.

Water birth

very calming..helps ease the pain too...

but when that delivery comes..you'll think twice about pain meds. i went until i was about 7cm to get an ITN(walking epidural) it began to hurt and the meds also helped me sleep. And most of the time you need Potossun (sp?) to help contractions and to get labor going quicker

pain meds didnt hurt my baby at all..and i ihad potossun and 2 epidurals. my baby was a 9.5/10 on the apgar chart

I had my 3 natural.....It does hurt, I'm not going to lie, But if it was that bad everyone would only have 1 child......You forget the pain as soon as the baby comes into the world....It's worth it!!!
