good question. For my 16th birthday, I didn't do anything, nor did i receive any gift except a birthday card. That day just went by like any other day..actually i had to take the final exam for my school. I didn't feel bad or anything, because birthday celebrations are not important to me. The important things are my goals and my efforts to achieve them. If I did achieve my goals, I would be very happy, even if there's no celebration for it.

I think people celebrate them is because if you are not happy about aging, celebration is a great way to bring your spirit up. heh

edit

Oh yeah, I don't care about gifts either, the greatest gifts to me is my achievements through my hard works. I felt happy after my b-day because I got all 99's on my exams. Though I would be happier with 100's.

I can think of three reasons off the top of my head as to why it's useful (and, thus, should be celebrated):

1. While it does reflect you getting older, it also helps you keep track of exactly how old you are. That's helpful in knowing your limits (like if I'm 80, I probably should be more careful not to fall because I'm more likely to break something- you wouldn't think of this if you didn't know how old you are).

2. Like New Years, it lets you reflect on the past year and your life in general. This is useful in helping to make and achieve goals.

3. It gives you day to relax and enjoy. People need to unwind every once and a while and this provides such an opportunity.

Not all three of these may be equally valid for every person, but I think all three are good points.

I think a birthday is a special holiday that celebrates you, the year you've had and how you've grown physically and mentally.

Every year is a celebration of your survival on this big bad earth.
I think we need to celebrate the fact that we are here and we live and learn and hopefully enjoy the time we're here.

I just love these philosophy questions.
Well, birthdays are great. That means I made it through another year and I'm still alive.
So, to answer your philosophical question: why celebrate? My answer: why not?
