A rear wheel drive race car with a V-8 based on a front wheel drive car with a V-6? They should go back to the old days of racing when the cars had to be bought from a dealership. Maybe after a few years of watching little four and six bangers limp around the track at 90 miles-per-hour the manufacturers would start getting serious about making real cars again.

Before 2000 the stock car rules applied very strictly in rally. Every manufacturer that wanted to race at the top level had to sell a limited amount of 4x4 WD 2 liter turbo intercooler cars. So you could buy a real racer. After 2000 (or 99 I dont remember) the rules changed, and the number of teams increased. Manufacturers that didnt want to waste funds developing a stock version of a WRC car, could also compete. Two manufacturers however continued to produce stock rally cars Subaru (impreza WRX STI) and Mitsubishi (Lancer Evolution).

The Nextel Cup cars are based on actual production cars. Even though you seen mainly V-6 models. The manufactors have to produce a certain number ( i think around 1,500) of cars in order to be used in NASCAR. So there are V-8 models out there, but maybe only a limited number.

They want the competition to be tight. If they had it your way on manufacturer would run away from the field. Oh and they have to have extra safety features. Run into a wall with your car at 180mph and see how it feels.
