Uh..well, I hear LSD mimics the symptoms of schizophrenia, but... to become permanently schizophrenic?
I'd say bad genes would do it.
Oh, and listen to those bad things your fish have to say about you.

Step 1:
Paranoia, just imagine Ppl are thinking bad things about you. Animals too, if you want.
Random things, like when someones nice (they're faking it, so they can plot against you).
Step 2: Voices in your head, god talking to you, maybe a few demons. Satan's a good one too.
