To stop Windows Automatic Updates go to the Control Panel, click on Security Center (from the Classic View*) and then click on Automatic Updates and turn them off there.

I would still check for updates on a regular basis as they are sometimes critical to keeping your system safe.

* Click on "Switch to Classic View" in the column at the left.

1. Well, Rootkit... don't use it. 2. Don't stop Automatic update (unless you have unlicensed copy of Windows) 3. Your PC seems have kind of memory problem (RAM), thus, most probably you need to change them. However, if your PC is still under warranty, you may go back to the service center and they will take care of it. Otherwise, the blue screen needs an expert. But, 90% of the cases its related to memory hardware problem. Good Luck!!!

In Windows Xp, go to Start--->Control Panel--->Security Center--->Look for Automatic Updates and select OFF.

If you do not have XP, go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and there is an option to schedule your updates. Choose the option that says no updates or manually do them.
